Day 28: Animal style

Today was another mellow day. For breakfast this morning, we couldn't resist having another dosa - not the easiest thing to digest at 9 in the morning. But it sure tasted great going down. With stomachs full of dosa and a half gallon of milk each (our daily ritual 7 Eleven purchase to keep our protein intake up), we departed for the famed Singapore Zoo. After visiting this zoo, we will never be content with an American zoo again. It is simply phenomenal how well designed the exhibits are. You actually feel as though you are in the wild with the animals, without any barriers - we nearly stepped on an iguana crossing the path, and came face to face with a rhinocerous. One of the other highlights was throwing a live fish into the polar bear enclosure and watching the 500 lb beast chase it down with the agility of a dancer.

We headed back downtown to visit the Asian Civilizations Museum, which we were too exhausted to truly enjoy (not to mention the fact that all of these Asian history museums are beginning to look identical, with their blue and white pottery and ancient Buddha statues missing their arms).

A young American couple from San Diego (she actually spent a year at SBCC and looks like Cameron Diaz's long lost twin, and he is an ex-pro surfer turned chef) that are staying in our dorm room told us all the ins and outs of travelling in Bali. He has been going to Bali since 1999 for surf competitions, so we are taking his advice seriously. After having the Indian equivalent of Thanksgiving dinner with the two at a banana leaf restaurant (we couldn't finish half the food on the table), we couldn't be more excited to get to Indonesia. We fly out tomorrow.

  1. Great photos! The titles to your blog entries are so witty. You two kissing the belly dancer on the check is a clever twist on the over used pose that clutters Danny's Facebook albums.

Figured Indonesia being a Muslin country would give you little opportunity to indulge your thirst for alcohol. Boy was I wrong. They are among one of the biggest liquor importers in the world. Who knew!? I also read they have a curious custom about not using your left hand. I'm sure your "bible" aka the Lonely Planet Guide Book has the 411 on all that.

Please be extra extra cautious while in Indonesia, and enjoy what is heralded as the largest archipelago in the world with the ultimate in diversity.

    Love from all of us.

  2. I am surprised that of the five monkeys in that tree with you Ashwin, only one is even looking at you. She seems amused. On second glance I am wondering if they are even real! It is a great picture, regardless.

Safe travel to Yogyakarta I hope. Love you.

  3. next time you should try having those pictures taken with real monkeys in the trees and real life huge cats jumping at you... only then will you even begin to understand my new obsession.

  4. The zoo sounds beautiful! I believe Anu mentioned Planet Earth earlier which is one of the most amazing things to see because you get a real glimpse of what animals look like in their natural habitats undisturbed by mankind. It sounds like this zoo came a lot closer to imitating that intimate glimpse than I’ve seen before in any zoo.

I’m glad that you two took the couples’ advice about Bali seriously. I’ve learned that talking to people who have actually visited the places you’re going before or have lived there are the best resources for travel…even better than your “bible” lol

Also, the title of this post is giving me a major craving for some In-N-Out!
